What will I learn?
- Become more familiar with a couple of the Google App applications, and have fun setting up your own web page!
Watch this
Here are a couple of other short movies to watch about two Google Apps applications:
Google Docs in Plain English (2:50) (organizing and sharing documents)
…and this
iGoogle: a mini product tour (0:50) (your own customizable web page)
Now what do I have to do?
Let’s have fun!
There are several easy personalized home page applications out there, including My Yahoo, Netvibes or Pageflakes. Use any of them to add gadgets, widgets, flakes or modules. This example following uses iGoogle so that everyone in our community can experiment on the same application and share experiences. Certainly try out others if you’re adventurous!
iGoogle allows you to set up your own temporary web page. If you have a domain, you could load this permanently, but otherwise just have fun and get a feel for what is easily possible! Google Apps allows you to add your other organizational tools, like Calendar, Gmail, Reader and Documents to have a one-stop-shop on your iGoogle desktop, but seek help from your IT department if you’re not confident about establishing this Home Page yourself.
- Go to iGoogle to set up your fun page
- Start by selecting some of Google’s most popular content by clicking check-boxes. Add your own “theme” if you like, and then add any one of the dozens of other “gadgets” or “stuff” that you like.
- When you click on “save”, your new web page appears in http://www.google.com/ig
- On the left side of your page you’ll see a Home button, which is the first “tab”. Click on the down arrow icon to create a new tab, and add any content that you like. Note that you can share these tabs with a friend too.
