What is a Podcast?

In 2005 podcast was named the “word of the year” by New Oxford American Dictionary. The word “podcast” comes from joining Portable On Demand (pod, like iPod) and “cast” from Broadcast”, Podcast!

A podcast is simply a recording that has been made available in a usable format on the internet. What differentiates a podcast from regular streaming audio or video is that the delivery method for podcasts is often done automatically through RSS. Podcasting means that listeners can “time shift” their favourite programs by listening when it suits them. The majority of podcasts today are made available in the Mp3 file format. Podcasts can range in content from a group of people having a conversation over a cup of tea to the latest documentary presented on the BBC. Podcasts range in quality from professional recordings to those done with a mobile phone on the fly.

What makes podcasts interesting is that they are a forum for delivering content, that in the past did not have a means of being easily distributed to a mass audience.

What do I have to do?
