So what is ’social bookmarking’?

Social bookmarking uses tags to organize your favorite web sites, through an online web site rather than the ‘favorites’ tied to the browser on your particular computer. Once you begin tagging your bookmarks you can share them with friends, which makes it ’social’.

So in laymen’s term social bookmarking = the open sharing of links. If you would like to read further, you might like to take a look at the extensive Wikipedia definition for Social Bookmarking

What is del.icio.us?

del.icio.us, is a web-based social bookmarking manager which enables users to bookmark web pages and add tags to categorize their bookmarks. It is very similar to the “Bookmarks” or “Favorites” folders in Firefox or Internet Explorer, except much better.

One of the wonderful features of del.icio.us, is that you never have to remember which computer you saved the link on. This is of course ideal for anyone who uses more than one computer. This also includes library patrons using the internet who don’t own a computer. Helping your users to set up a del.icio.us account paves the path for them to be able to consistently access their favorite websites.

While del.icio.us may be the most well known social bookmarking service, it is not alone. Several other services, such as Ma.gnolia, Reddit, Stumble Upon, Digg, and Simpy, provide different options for your social bookmarking needs. Look into some of these alternatives and see how they might better serve you or the library.
