Photo sharing websites have been around since the 90s, but it took a small startup site called Flickr to catapult the idea of “sharing” into a full blown online community. Flickr has become the fastest growing photo sharing site on the web and is known as one of the first websites to use keyword “tags” to create associations and connections between photos and users of the site. As Flickr is unavailable in the UAE, there are good alternative websites, and an interesting and short critique of alternative image sharing sites here:

What do I have to do?

We are going to share some photos using photobucket.com

1. Go to www.photobucket.com
2. Search the photos for a subject you are interested in, (think about your hobbies & interests).
3. When you find an image you like, click on the thumbnail to view it full size
4. Look for the HTML CODE, (it’s underneath the image)
5. Click on the HTML CODE to copy it and paste it below as a comment
6. Easy… You just shared a photo with the group

PS: A quick word about photo posting etiquette - When posting identifiable photos of other people (especially minors) is it advisable to get the person’s permission before posting their photo in a publicly accessible place like Flickr. Never upload pictures that weren’t taken by you (unless you have the photographer’s consent) and always give credit when you include photos taken by someone else in your blog.

Now onto videos!

You too can YouTube!

Within the past year online video hosting sites have exploded allowing users to easily to upload and share videos on the web. YouTube is currently top dog serving up over 20 million video views a day and allowing users not only to upload their own video content easily, but also embed clips into their own sites.

Do some searching around YouTube yourself and see what the site has to offer. You’ll find everything from 60s music videos to kids singing about bloopers here. Of course, like any free site you’ll also find a lot stuff not worth watching too. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t explore and see for yourself what the site has too offer.

Most of the videos on Web 2.0 in this “Learning 2.0″ blog were found on YouTube!
